Image Clarity(DOI, Distinctness of Image)

AG (anti-glare) materials use surface microstructures to scatter light, reducing reflections and improving readability; however, these characteristics can also reduce image clarity.
Based on international standards, SMS quantifies changes in light intensity to accurately evaluate the impact of AG on display clarity. The measurement concepts are as follows.

MTF = MAG / M0
MAG: modulation of AG material
M0 : modulation of display w/o AG material

Sparkle

After calculating the standard value of the DOI index using the SMS-1000, it quantifies the level of sparkle by comparing it with the display’s overall brightness level (reference value).
A lower percentage value indicates that sparkle is less visible. The calculation concept is as follows.

Sparkle: s = σ / μ
σ:standard deviation
μ: mean of display light intensity

Reflection Distribution Function (RDF)

AR coatings reduce reflected light directly, whereas AG coatings improve readability by scattering light through surface microstructures.
Due to this scattering effect, the intensity of reflected light reaching the user’s eyes decreases, and screen visibility improves even in bright environments.
Measuring the distribution of scattered light is a key factor in evaluating the diffusion performance of AG glass.

Transmission Distribution Function (TDF)

In addition to reflected-light scattering, SMS also measures transmitted-light scattering.
As is well known, the scattering performance of AG (anti-glare) materials has a significant impact on display uniformity.
SMS precisely evaluates transmitted-light diffusion and provides data that accurately reflects the optical characteristics of AG materials.
